EuropeanTeamgym Championships 2012

Wednesday, 17 October 2012 - Saturday, 20 October 2012

Denmark has won the rights to host the second official European TeamGym Championships in the NRGi Arena in the City of Aarhus. This gives the Danish team (m) the opportunity to defend their gold medal on home ground.

In the wake of the European Gymnastics Federation’s (UEG’s) meeting in January 2011, it was announced that the TeamGym Championships 2012 will be on Danish soil in 2012. The Danish bid was up against fierce competition from Iceland and the Czech Republic.

President of the Danish Gymnastics Federation (DGF), Flemming Knudsen says: “We are very pleased to take on the hosting of this great event. It gives us the opportunity to promote and expose, maybe the most popular kind of all gymnastics, to a wider audience and to show the world how gymnastics can “blow off the roof of the arena” thanks to an enthusiastic audience”.

The public community in the host city of Aarhus is looking forward to welcoming both participants and spectators and to show them what Aarhus can offer.

Mayor of Culture, Sport and Citizen Services, Marc Perera Chistensen adds: ”I am proud that once again, we have succeeded in attracting a major international sports event to the City of Aarhus. It enhances our image as an international city offering great sports experiences to both local citizens and visitors”.

Sport Event Denmark, the national event organisation, is pleased about the event, too, as it consolidates the mutual strategy that the organisation has made with DGF.
CEO of Sport Event Denmark, Lars Lundov, explains: ”For some time, we have worked determinedly to attract gymnastics events continuously to Denmark and we are in the process of succeeding. In 2011 we are hosting a world cup trampoline, and after the European TeamGym Championships 2012, we hope to win the rights to host the World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships 2015.”.

TeamGym was introduced for the first time in competitions in Denmark in the 1970’es. Over the past few years, Denmark has dominated the European ranking list and lately Denmark picked up gold medals in the team competition for men as well as bronze medals in the mix competition.
