Aarhus has, once again, succeeded in attracting an international yacht-racing championship event to the Bay of Aarhus, in the Kaløvig area of the bay.
The event on this occasion will be the class Soling European Championship; a former Olympic boat-class, in which Danish sailors have produced some great results over the years with Poul Erik Høj Jensen and Jesper Bank both taking Olympic gold.
”We were contacted by the Danish representative for the international Soling class association in June last year”, explains Thomas Capitani, Director of Sailing Aarhus. ”The class association was actually set on carrying out this European Championship in the Netherlands, but, unfortunately for them, the organisers had to cancel the event, and the class association needed to find a new host venue. It was a choice between Yacht Club Punta Ala, which is one of the top-league professional clubs in Italy, and Sailing Aarhus, and we were proud even to be considered in company as distinguished as this.”
Even if this boat class is no longer an Olympic class it is still highly active and very competitive, setting the highest standards for the host club in terms of experience in organising international yacht racing. ”With firsthand experience of their many previous successful events in the Bay of Aarhus”, says Frank Højlund Lavrsen of the International Soling Association, ”we chose to part-ner up with Sailing Aarhus when the President of our class association had also had good reports of Sailing Aarhus via his positions in the ISAF.”
