A-Class Catamaran World Championship 2011
Sailing Aarhus held the 2011 Ronstan A-Class Catamaran World Championship in August with great success based at the Kaløvig Bådelaug yachting club. The A-Class Catamaran, which has been called the fastest single-handed yacht in the world, is an extremely spectacular and ad-vanced boat class. The spectators on the shore and the large number of people who followed the yachting event on the internet were indeed also treated to numerous spectacular events.
The boats are extremely fast and therefore also extremely challenging for the racing sailors, who need to be in peak fitness and highly experienced. This naturally attracts the cream of the crop, which the participants’ list also clearly reflected with a large number of top-ranking sailors – with the Olympics, the America's Cup and other prestigious yacht-racing events included on their CVs – competing in this World Championship event. The America's Cup – the major attraction within the sport of yachting – will consist of a fleet of catamarans this time. This was indeed the reason why the field of competitors included America's Cup celebrities, and why one of the world's best yacht designers/boat builders had also joined in.
Following lots of drama in the last races, the championship turned out to be a total triumph for the Aussie crews. The top three finishers were from down under, with the new World Champion, Steve Brewin, at the very top. The six best ranked boats in the final standing were all from Aus-tralia!
